| Trips & Tours | Take an excursion to see the whales and dolphins that frequent Tenerife’s warm waters, which are particularly good on the Southern coast of the Island. There is an abundance of tours that can be taken and most can be booked by your reception, or through an agent such as “Status Excursions” who can be found in Los Cristianos, who will give you the best deals and the best advice, the link above is for their own web site which is well worth a visit before you arrive. Whilst you are walking about you will see brochures placed on the walls for Miller tours, otherwise known as the “bedding tours” and others, these are well worth a look as they are quite cheap and good value. The other way to go is to use a company called Viajes Teide who is a very good professional company who cover every type of tour. |
Candelaria |
Only a few kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is the islands capital is the small town of Candelaria where in the main square there is the Basilica with the Black Madonna. The Madonna is the protecting patron of the whole Canary Islands and also the place where the yearly pilgrimage takes place in August. The Basilica occupies a large central square with one side open to the sea with nine very large bronze sculptures of the last Guanche Menceys or native kings of the island stand. This town is on the south facing coast and is a tiny holiday resort in its own right. |
El Monasterio |
On this trip after we had been to the demonstration, we were then taken for lunch at the El Monasterio, this was all outside dinning in a courtyard area and there was even some very bright coloured cockerels walking about. After lunch there was a tour of the complex and we had some free time to see the gardens and take in the panoramic views over the town of Puerto de la Cruz and the Orotava valley. Then it was on to the town of La Laguna the oldest university city which was declared a world heritage site by Unesco in 1999, and just wandered through the old city with its unique historic buildings taking in the views. |
| Piramides de Guimar |
Since 1991, the stepped pyramids of Guimar were investigated by the famous Norwegian anthropologist Dr. Thor Heyerdahl, who considered them similar in style to others in Mexico, Peru and ancient Mesopotamia Ethnographic Park ‘Pyramids of Guimar’ offers the opportunity to visit these interesting monuments and shows the various theories of the origins and diffusion of ancient civilizations. Archaeologists and authorities scoffed when a local newspaper published an article claiming to have discovered mysterious step pyramids on the island of Tenerife. Agricultural terraces are just said, very common in all the Canary Islands. But Thor Heyerdahl thought differently. Dr. Heyerdahl, who had done extensive research at Tucume pyramids in Peru, was intrigued by the photos on this site, and when he visited this valley to see for himself, he was without a doubt. These terraces and debris were not randomly placed stones of the work carried out by the Spanish, the explanation given by many. Pyramids were built with a lot of work using principles similar to those of Mexico, Peru and ancient Mesopotamia. Ethnographic Park of ‘Pyramids of Güimar’ offers the possibility to visit these rare and interesting structures and offer theories as to the possible diffusion of ancient civilizations. Besides the pyramids of 6 stairs, the park offers Entográfico the museum Casa Chacona, a life-size replica of the raft RA II, Auditorium / Cinema, café and a souvenir shop organic. |
